This month over at Later Levels, Brandon from ThatGreenDude asks:

Many of us say that we would like to live in a video game world but surely we would have a family. My question is, which video game characters would be a part of your family in a gaming world of your choice?

I was kind of surprised when an answer instantly came to mind, since I usually spend ages trying to work out what I could possibly say for these QOTMs, but then I realised that I wasn’t surprised at all.

It should be no secret that Kingdom Hearts is kind of my favourite thing ever, so it was inevitable that it’s where my gaming family would come from. Why these characters, though? KH has a huge roster, but I can’t have all of them be my new family, so I had to limit it to just a few. The series is full of trios, but this one – Terra, Aqua, and Ventus, known as the Wayfinder Trio – is already a lot like a family, and they all deserve a happy ending.

These three have been through some of the worst stuff out of anyone in the franchise – they first appeared in Birth by Sleep, a prequel entry in the series that showed us just how evil Xehanort, the primary antagonist, can truly be (and how, back in the present timeline, he’s responsible for so much suffering). Just as a quick snapshot:

• Terra is tricked into accepting darkness, killing his master and father figure, and finally becoming a new vessel for Xehanort (he gets possessed, but the implication is that he’s still aware and in there, which must suck).
• Ventus was literally split in two, then faced the dark version of himself. He then saw his big brother figure (Terra) gradually going down the wrong path, and eventually ended up sort-of combining with his dark side before finally falling comatose, his heart and body completely broken.
• Aqua witnessed all this happening to her two best friends before getting trapped in the Realm of Darkness, where she’s completely helpless and spends years just wandering total nothingness. (Until she gets Norted. Maybe.)

These three would do anything for each other, and they deserve to be reunited and finally find happiness as a family together. Heck, I don’t even need to be in the picture: just let this lot be happy, for heck’s sake!
